More about Top-level domains

Who could have ever imagined how the Internet would come to be. Even though the history of the Internet does not go back that far, it sure has come a long way.

Many people were hoping to see the top-level domain names expanded. If domain names such as travel.com, travel.org, and travel.net have already been grabbed up, new top level domains would allow opportunities for other travel type businesses. For several years now there has been intense political and legal battles about what new top level domain names should be approved. Not just that, but who should be responsible for managing these new TLD’s.

What does this mean for domain name owners? In between the www and the top-level domain, is our brand name. It is ours and we need to protect it. But lots of people like to protect their domains by purchasing all the top-level domain names. For example, if I wanted to protect my web address www.travel.com, I might purchase.net,.biz,.or info, and so on. For big companies with big budgets this is not a big deal. For the little guy however, it starts to add up.

Not a big deal I guess, but the Internet continues to grow. As time goes on many new top level domains will be added. I myself will probably always stick with the .com TLD. I still consider it the number one choice.
